As a Matthew 25 congregation, the primary mission of our church is to engage in meaningful, Christ-centered worship that leads to nurturing and serving both our congregation and our community through spiritual growth, outreach and mission efforts. By God's grace, and through the power of God's Holy Spirit, we have hope that our faith will deepen and that we can become a greater blessing to the world around us.

HISTORY of OUR CONGREGATION 

Grove Presbyterian Church originated on October 1, 1785, as the Mahoning English Presbyterian Church, the first church chartered in Mahoning Settlement, now known as Danville, Pennsylvania. Early settlers had purchased land in 1775 and eventually completed a log structure on the site.  The original log church was replaced by a brick edifice in 1826.  As the town of Danville grew southward toward the river it was decided to move the congregation about ½ mile south.  The Mahoning Presbyterian Church structure was built and dedicated in 1853.  Sentimental attachment to the old grove ran strongly in the hearts of some of the congregation and they longed to return to the original site.  An amicable arrangement was concluded, the brick church was restored to use, and the “North” Presbyterian congregation came into being on October 2, 1855.  A change of name was authorized in July of 1864 to “The Grove Presbyterian Church of Danville.”  

The present Gothic stone building with the high spire was dedicated on October 24, 1875. The Moeller organ was installed in 1914 and was moved from the balcony to the front of the sanctuary in 1920.  It is one of the largest in the area. 

In 1987 the manse, located on the corner of Bloom and A Street, was converted into the Kirk House, which houses offices and meeting rooms.  On September 24, 1995, an addition which included a renovation of the fellowship hall and basement Sunday school classrooms, was dedicated.  The stonework to this addition matches the Shickshinny grey stone used in the original Gothic structure.     

 

In 2007 an adjacent property with a 2-story home on Bloom Street was purchased.  Dubbed “Hackey House” in honor of a beloved youth leader, the first-floor houses Grove youth programming and the local chapter of Young Life.  There are two second floor rental apartments.  One is currently occupied. The second is undergoing extensive renovation that is expected to be completed in Fall of 2025.  In addition to the Hackey House renovation, Grove completed a remodel of the church kitchen facilities in Fall of 2024.  

 

The church has a strong and stable congregation, offering numerous ministry opportunities and programs to its members and the broader community.
